What Are the Chances to Win at Bingo?
Unless you have been living under a rock, there is a strong chance that you have heard and played bingo with friends during social gatherings and even at bingo halls. What makes bingo so exciting to play is that winning the bingo jackpot does not require any form of skill; all you need is the ability to track all the released number to those found at your cards. Because of this, bingo halls are flocked by people ranging from those who have just reached the legal gambling age to those who are already in their twilight years. Some play it purely for fun while others are bent to win the big prize. But even with all the randomness of the game, what are the chances to win at bingo?
How Bingo Is Played
Bingo is played using cards that have a 5-by-5 grid containing numbers from 1 to 75. Each column is named after a letter of game and can only have numbers from a range of 25. This means that column B can only have numbers from 1 to 25, while column I can get numbers from 26 to 50. All columns can have 5 numbers each except for column N, since the middle box is considered a free number. Hence, your single card can have any 24 numbers.
To win a prize, one of your cards must match a pattern determined before the beginning of each round. The pattern could be as simple as a straight line and can become more complex as the bingo prizes become higher. Each of the 75 numbers is then randomly picked one by one until some card gets a match. Unlike the lottery, the game will continue until someone wins. Here is a probability fact for you: the longer the game goes on, your chances of winning becomes higher.
Crunching the Numbers
There are many factors that will govern your chances. Such factors include the winning pattern, the number of players, and the number of cards you have. If the winning pattern is any straight line, your chances are 5/75 or 6.7% per line, and each card has a 32% chance to match the pattern. However, since the numbers keep getting drawn until somebody wins, your chances of winning at first will be the same as everybody. You do have the advantage if you start getting the first few numbers of a pattern. But the randomness can mean the next numbers drawn can give you a drought, allowing other players to catch up.
Getting the Winning Edge
The most important way to raise your chances is to increase the number of cards you are playing with. If there are a 50 players and each has two cards, everybody has an equal chance of getting the jackpot, which is at 2%. But if you double you cards, your chances will almost double. The catch here is that when you have many cards, your skill in keeping track of the drawn numbers is tested. Thus, you also lose a chance of winning if you miss a number.
Still, even with all the mathematics, the chances that you will enjoy every game is almost guaranteed.
